All items will be organized by publication date and will generally meet these two criteria to appear here: (1) the item must prominently feature a photo of a player/coach of the basketball team on the cover and/or (2) be written exclusively about Indiana University basketball.
Item: Big Ten Weekly - Western Conference Athletics (December 31, 1925)

Item: 1953-54 Hoosier Hot Shots - IU Basketball Scrapbook
This magazine showcases newspaper clippings from every game of the season in a “scrapbook” format. The nostalgia here is amazing with full coverage of each game accompanied by plenty of game photos. The cover graces the likes of Dick Farley, Don Schlundt, Bob Leonard, Charley Kraak, Burke Scott, and Dick White.
There’s a great feature inside profiling Coach Branch McCracken and his wife, Mary Jo, providing a glimpse of the life of a basketball family outside of the court and the intimate relationship between the coach, his wife, and his 20-25 “sons”. Another interesting item to highlight from my initial, quick read…with all of the success that McCracken’s team had during his time at the helm of the Indiana University basketball program, I was surprised to see him profiled as the “Head Coach of Worry” in the featurette. It was said he was known to pace the floor for hours thinking about games yet to be played and even suffered from insomnia. That anxiousness behind the curtain is what seemed to fuel the charades and antics that became part of his coaching persona.

Item: 1954 NCAA Official Collegiate Basketball Record Book (Don Schlundt / Bob Leonard Cover)
I’ve had my eye on snagging a copy of this for quite some time — and finally found one in excellent condition (they’re often in fairly rough shape) for what I thought was a good price. It’s got a great cover featuring Don Schlundt and Bobby Leonard.
I started reading through this today and learned that before Bobby became “Slick”, he had a previous moniker — “The Terre Haute Terror”…number II. This name appears to have been coined by writer James Enright of the Chicago Herald-American in the article he wrote for this book, titled The Official Collegiate Basketball Record Book, where he previewed the upcoming 1954 basketball season. The first terror — according to him — was Bud Taylor, a boxer from back in the day who also hailed from Terre Haute. Later in the article, he would predict that IU would win back-to-back titles with essentially the full cast returning from the ‘53 team — who wouldn’t have? As for Leonard, Enright was bold in proclaiming him “the greatest individual player in basketball…pound for pound, dribble for dribble, pass for pass, and shot for shot”.
And there you have it…the Terre Haute Terror II.
