Attention! There’s a new “marshal” in the General’s Assembly.
On February 5, 1987, Steve Alford lit up Jud Heathcote’s Michigan State Spartans basketball squad for 42 points, breaking a scoring record that stood for 14 years at that time (Steve Downing, 1973). Indiana would win the game 84-80.
While it took nearly 35 years to break Steve Alford’s Assembly Hall single game scoring record, thankfully, and quite ironically, it only took me 43 days to get that historical ticket stub signed by Trayce Jackson-Davis.
On the heels of Thanksgiving Day, I had much to be thankful for to be in Assembly Hall on that record-setting day. My dad, mom, and son were all able to make the trip together and spend some time up in B-town before the game, doing a little customary “picking” and having a stromboli at one of my dad’s favorites, Cafe Pizzaria.
Later that night, Indiana would go on to defeat the Marshall Thundering Herd 90-79 behind Trayce Jackson-Davis’ 43 points.
After the game was over, all I could think about was how cool it would be to have my ticket stub from game signed by Trayce. Of course, as is always the case, I was out on the floor after the game hoping for a quick cameo, but that didn’t materialize. I don’t get to go to games as often as I’d like, so on the way home…and ever since…I’ve been reminding (ok, begging) my parents to take their ticket stubs (they have season tickets) with them in case there was an opportunity for him to sign one of them. Unfortunately, no dice up to this point.
Today, my wife and I attended our first game together in nearly three years, simply because of the impact of the pandemic but even more so, because of the beautiful baby Hoosier we welcomed into our family recently. After today’s win against Minnesota, and much to my surprise and delight, Trayce made a brief appearance on the court after the game and I was able to score a sig! Didn’t realize my wife was snapping a photo. As always, I let the young kids get their photos and signatures ahead of me — I’m happy that my sharpie came in handy for a couple of the little fans in front of me.
This ticket stub is a welcomed addition of Indiana Hoosier basketball memorabilia to the vault!
