Knight Time Rewind: January 7, 1928
ON THIS DAY: On this day in 1928, sophomore center Branch McCracken would single handedly outscore visiting Chicago, establishing an IU and Big Ten record by scoring 24 points in a 31-13 victory.
McCracken would lead the Big Ten Conference in scoring during most of the year and would finish tied for second.
The photo featured here is one of two signed Branch McCracken items that I have in my collection. McCracken signatures are quite rare — if you have an opportunity to score one, take the shot!
Also sharing some history in 2001…Kirk Haston would splash one from deep at the buzzer to upset #1 Michigan State, ending MSU’s 23 game winning streak. Haston would finish with 27 points to lead IU to a 59-58 victory, including the game winning three that was only the 6th in his career. In fact, the Spartans hadn’t lost since their most recent visit to Assembly the prior season. This victory marked the first time Indiana had beaten the top team in the country at Assembly Hall.
Go Hoosiers!
