Knight Time Rewind: January 6, 1993
ON THIS DAY: On this day in 1993, Bob Knight earns his 600th career coaching victory by defeating the visiting Iowa Hawkeyes 75-67. At 52 years old, he became the youngest coach in history to achieve the feat. This victory would also mark the beginning of 13 straight wins to start Big Ten conference play en route to an eventual championship.
Indiana would fall behind by as much as eight points in the first half before Knight would get a spark from his bench. After inserting Damon Bailey and Greg Graham into the lineup, the pair would combine to score 28 of Indiana’s next 35 points, led by a barrage of threes from Bailey, who would finish the contest with 5 and a game high 21 points.
Later, Knight would end up skipping the post-game presser, sending in someone to tell the media he needed to prepare for a hunting trip the following day.
Ironically, Indiana would defeat Knight’s alma mater Ohio State today at Assembly Hall, a day serving as tribute to the legendary coach where players and coaches wore special shirts and the first 1,000 fans in attendance would receive a commemorative book and patch combo.
